What do you need to qualify as a lawyer in Hong Kong?
Students with an LLB from the University of Manchester returning to Hong Kong to embark on a career practising law must then pass their Postgraduate Certificate in Laws in order to win a training contract. Competition for a PCLL is tough, but your course at Manchester will prepare you for obtaining this next qualification.

I applied to the University of Manchester through Clearing. Despite a time difference between Hong Kong and the UK, my application was processed really quickly. My application was accepted a day after I applied. Applying through Clearing can be worrying but my advice to those who are going through this process is to take your time and consider your options carefully so you make the right decision.
I am from Hong Kong and I had never been to Manchester prior to University. The culture in Manchester is different from Hong Kong but the University has many societies that group together people from the same country. The MANPASS HK Society, for example, organised pre-departure talks and orientation days for us to get to know people taking on the same experience before we even got to Manchester. However, meeting people in Manchester especially in halls and in the same course has been enjoyable.
Manchester is an easy place to fit in. There is a nice mixture of entertainment and opportunities and the University of Manchester goes to great lengths to make sure we are settled in and are enjoying student life. Manchester is a place that provides both entertainment and opportunities and is perfect for this phase of your life! A highlight has probably been the support I have received from my peer mentor, who gives you advice on things like how long you should study, what to get involved with and so on just helps you settle in.
An important aspect of legal studies are practical applications, and I have always tried to take opportunities to do placements and internships while in Manchester. Having a more diverse range of experiences of high profile cases helps with employability because this experience comes in handy.
After University, I hope to return to Hong Kong and kickstart my career in the legal field as a barrister. There is nothing better than doing what you like as a career especially when you get to help and represent others.
