My current role and how I got there

Faris Ghandour

I manage customer/supply relationships and lead system integrations to improve workflows. I collaborate with teams across finance, sales, and supply chain to maintain efficiency and support key stakeholders.

Studying finance gave me a really strong foundation in key concepts like investment analysis and risk management, which I’ve found myself applying constantly in my current role. The practical projects and real-world case studies were a huge part of shaping how I approach challenges, really helping me to think critically and solve problems effectively.

Along the way, I had opportunities to connect with industry professionals, attend networking events, and even take on internships that gave me a real taste of the finance world and helped me figure out the direction I wanted to take. Looking back, the course didn’t just give me the technical knowledge I needed but also the confidence and experience to step into the industry and find my path.

The role I’m in now was a direct result of a part-time student job I took on during my studies. It’s a reminder to put yourself out there, explore different opportunities, and see what’s available. You never know how something seemingly small during your time at university could set you up for success after you graduate.

My experience at Manchester

I chose to study my course at the University of Manchester because it felt like the perfect student city, as well as its great reputation, diverse community, and a program that really matched what I’m passionate about while opening new doors for me.

My course definitely helped me narrow down the career path I wanted to pursue. I always knew I wanted to be in this field, but my course showed me all the different areas I can go into. This allowed me to decide what to put my focus on.

The most surprising takeaway from my course was how much the people I met influenced and shaped my journey. My professors weren’t just experts in their fields; they were genuinely invested in helping us grow, always encouraging me to think critically and challenge the status quo. My classmates came from such diverse backgrounds, and collaborating with them exposed me to fresh perspectives and taught me how to approach problems creatively and effectively.

Beyond the academics, I developed skills I didn’t even realise I needed; resilience, adaptability, and the ability to communicate complex ideas clearly, all of which have been invaluable in my career. I also learned how to build strong relationships, whether it was through group projects or networking events, which has helped me not only professionally but personally. Looking back, it’s those connections and the personal growth that came with them that have had the most lasting impact on my life.

My advice for future students

My advice would be to take full advantage of everything the University has to offer. Whether it’s the resources, support, or opportunities to grow. Staying organised with your studies is key, but don’t forget to get involved in societies or networking events. These are fantastic ways to meet new people, build valuable skills, and make the most of your time at university. Looking back, those experiences are what truly made my time there memorable and rewarding.
